Photos from April SpeedPoets

Saturday’s gig was a blast!

Kate Jacobsen made the room smile with her honeyed vocals and country hooks; Thomas Day blew things up with a live installation that unpicked the seams of sexuality and war; and the 26 open mic readers whispered, roared and enchanted. Call-Back-Poet for the month was SpeedPoets first-timer, Simon Kindt, with a poem for Dorothy Porter that sent a shiver through the entire room.

I will be posting a feature on Simon later in the week, but for now, here’s a few pics from the day, thanks to the lovely Chloe Callistemon.

SpeedPoets brings the words to Brew (Lower Burnett Lane, Brisbane City) from 2pm – 5:30pm this Saturday, August 4. The month of August hosts the debut Brisbane feature set from 2012 Arts QLD Poet-in-Residence, a.rawlings, who is fresh back from exploring the north and west of this gargantuan state of ours. Over the course of her two week regional tour, a.rawlings has been collecting sounds and images for her Sound Poetry and Visual Poetry project. This will launch at A Million Bright Things on Saturday night at QLD Poetry Festival (August 25), so we may just be lucky enough to get a preview of some new work!

Here’s a.rawlings performing work from her debut collection, Wide Slumber for Lepidopterists:

The August gig will also feature the regular delights of free zines, raffles, the guitar roar of Sheish Money and Brisbane’s hottest Open Mic Section. And let’s not forget that all poets in the Open Mic are in contention to be named Call Back Poet of the month!

The Call Back Poet is selected by the monthly features and given the opportunity to perform a mini-feature to close the event (2 poems) as well as win the right to perform at the last gig of 2012 in November and be in the running for cash prizes and the title SpeedPoets Open Mic Champion. SpeedPoets April Feature #1: Ella Jeffery

SpeedPoets’ April event is going to blow out the Easter cobwebs. Moved back a week to Saturday April 14, SpeedPoets will deliver the regular delights of free zines, raffles, the roaring guitar of Sheish Money and Brisbane’s hottest Open Mic Section. And let’s not forget the Call Back Poet, selected by the monthly features to return to the stage and perform a mini set to close the day. The Call Back Poet also wins the right to perform at the last gig of 2012 and be in the running for cash prizes and the title SpeedPoets Open Mic Champion for 2012. So yes, make sure you come prepared!

One of the feature poets for the month of April is emerging voice, Ella Jeffery. Ella’s poetry and short fiction have appeared in literary journals Stilts and Rex, and QUTE magazine. She was born on the far north coast of New South Wales, moved to Brisbane in 2009 and then to San Diego, California, in 2010. She is now back in Brisbane and studies creative writing at QUT. As a taste of what’s to come, here’s a new poem from Ella.

**********

Clean

I make a cup of tea, while you
sleep on the veranda.
The ants are wild over plates
still sitting there from last night’s meal.

It’s late. I take a teaspoon
from the wire rack
and run it under cold water
to wash off the three or four ants
which are climbing it.

I hope
the water bears their bodies
kindly through the dark passages
under this house, the one
we’ve always shared.

March SpeedPoets Opens With A Bang!

The 2012 SpeedPoets year got off to a flyer last Sunday with our beloved new home Brew, full to squirming for most of the afternoon. March features Ross Donlon and mr oCean both turned in stunning sets and the Open Mic list was a mammoth 35 poets long, including 7 first time readers.

Highlights of the day for mine were Ross Donlon’s reading of his poem, The Boy and the Suitcase and mr Ocean’s guitared-up collaboration with Sheish Money. And let’s not forget the announcement of first Call Back Poet of the year…  yes, put your virtual hands together for first time SpeedPoets reader, Jo Brooks.

Jo will go on to feature at the November SpeedPoets event and be in the running for cash, prizes and the title Speedpoets Open Mic Champion for 2012. I will be running a feature on Jo in the next week, so keep your eyes peeled.

And a big thanks to Chloe Callistemon for snapping these great pics at the event. You can view the whole album here.

Change of Date for SpeedPoets in 2012

After 10 years of holding down the first Sunday of the month slot in Brisbane, SpeedPoets will now be held on the first Saturday of the month, with the first gig to be held on Saturday March 3 at our new home, Brew (Lower Burnett Lane, Brisbane City).

And that’s not the only change…

Brisbane’s longest running Open Mic will heat up with the introduction of the Call Back Poet Section. The Call Back Poet will be selected by the monthly features and given the opportunity to perform a mini-feature to close the event (3-4 poems) as well as win the right to perform at the last gig of 2012 and be in the running for cash prizes and the title SpeedPoets Open Mic Champion for 2012. So instead of just packing one or two poems in your pocket, make sure you come prepared… you may just be Called Back!

To celebrate the new year, SpeedPoets welcomes back one of their favourite sons, mr oCean, who has spent the last few years in Berlin immersing himself in all things poetry and music. Featuring alongside mr oCean will be Victorian poet and recent winner of the Wenlock Festival Poetry Prize, Ross Donlon. There will also be the regular free zines, raffles and roaring guitar of Sheish Money… 2012 is going to be a big year, so make sure you are there to see it start with a BANG!

SpeedPoets gets sexy in November

That’s right good people, on Sunday November 6, SpeedPoets wrap up their massive 10th year of gigs, with a feature set from the all shaking, all shimmying The Stress of Leisure. Fresh off a month long residency at The Powerhouse and with their spanking new 7″ vinyl single, Sex Times hot off the press, these guys are ready to explode. Here’s a taste of the band getting sexy at one of their recent Powerhouse shows:

With its reverb drenched chords and quirky keys, this should be blaring out of the windows of every car this Summer!

Joining The Stress of Leisure will be two local poets, Andrew Phillips and Michael Cohen, both performing their debut feature sets. And of course, there will be plenty of Open Mic action and the growling sounds of resident riff maker, Sheish Money.

So make sure you are there as the SpeedPoets cruise ship comes in to dock one last time in 2011. It’s going to be a long hot summer!

What: SpeedPoets final gig for 2011, featuring The Stress of Leisure, Andrew Phillips & Michael Cohen
When: 2pm – 5pm, Sunday November 6

SpeedPoets October Feature: Rachael Briggs

One of the features at the October gig is recent recipient of the 2011 Arts QLD Val Vallis Award for an Unpublished Poem, Rachael Briggs.

Rachael was born in upstate New York (the part with cows, not the part with skyscrapers) but is now a proud Australian who lives in West End.  She uses poetry as a way to unwind from her day job writing philosophy (which involves more squiggly symbols than you might expect). She has not yet discovered the meaning of life.

Here is a recent poem from Rachael:

Evening Falls over Fig Tree Pocket

Cockatoo flock squawks!
The pillow sky bursts, spilling
white and gold feathers.

Fruit bat night swoops in,
sucks blue from the horizon,
spits out a pale pulp.

Lorikeet sunset
pokes its orange beak between
callistemon clouds.

Fat brushtail tiptoes
down electric wires, hissing
needle-tooth static.

********************

SpeedPoets will also feature multi-award winning QLD poet, Nathan Shepherdson and one of Brisbane’s true musical innovators, Leighton Craig. And to make it that little bit extra special, Nathan and Leighton will be joining forces in a one-off collaboration just for you, the SpeedPoets audience!

There will also be the regular rumblings of SpeedPoets engine, Sheish Money and your chance to hit the stage in Brisbane’s hottest Open Mic Section.

Don’t miss it!

ocean making conversation

missing you
